Notch Builder and Projection Mapping

Time with Velvet Flare

During my internship in early 2024, I joined with Velvet Flare, which was located within Differdange, Luxembourg amidst the 1535* Creative Hub.

As an intern, I worked alongside an amazing creative team that would tackle a myriad of creative projects in the fields of 3D entertainment mediums. Within my time, I aided Velvet Flare with my specializations in both 3D modeling whilst learning Blender and Autodesk Maya further, and with Virtual Productions utilizing Notch Builder.

BLINK 2024

I was able to utilize Blender as the same toolset for creation Motion Graphic animations that I would for Notch Builder and Touch Designer, and utilize them for display against a stadium light display.

MUXR with Meptik Studios

From constructing a new physical Extended Reality film stage with the work of Meptik Studios with Miami University, to then directing the design of and constructing many virtual scenes for the stage, I was able to embrace and discover a new emerging technology to delve into.

Learning a Whole Different Way of Using Notch Builder

Recently, I had to lead a project in Projection Mapping video intended for being showcased onto the front of a building hosting an Interaction Design Showcase Expo in Miami University.

By utilizing my prior experience in Notch Builder, I was able to create the leading video to be projected onto the building. This was my first study into Projection Mapping, and assuredly will not be the last. I am currently heading towards getting more involved in learning the technical set ups for Projection Mapping just as I continue to get more comfortable with making more videos for such scenarios.

I was able to create the whole video to work to the track of Wildside by ALI

Additional Projection Mapping

I have done various miscellaneous brief Notch Builder loops for motion graphic effects to be utilized in projection mapping displays for background effects and museum projections. These were often cases of providing loops under the scrutiny and direction of an event coordinator or video editor for a building projection.

Notch Video Production

One of my larger Notch projects resulted in combining my knowledge of Notch Builder into creating a full Long Term Music Video for the whole length of a song.

The song and theme I choose to utilize was Igorrr’s Dorohedoro which was made for the CD album of the cult-classic manga and anime series of Dorohedoro. As the song was both the leading track of this album and matched the aesthetics of the series perfectly, my goal was to allude to pivotal scenes and moments from the series to fit the track of the song. This lead to me having to composite, animate, and time 5 different entire 3D scenes in Notch to fulfill this goal.

This is the following video I was able to produce with my current skill in using Notch Builder. Most 3D assets are not mine as this was a task entirely focused on composition itself rather than 3D creation, however for several model assets and repeating graphics I did have to create myself with Maya and Touch Designer in order to fully wrap the video. This is one of my recent Notch projects having had only few prior learning projects in Notch.

Illustrated Outline

Sound Reactivity in Notch

One of my early larger projects in Notch was working with Live Interaction for Notch Builder as the program allows the user to play the scene while editing. The point of this was to stream the live footage to a Room Interaction stage and activate triggers via inputs. The default scene can be seen in the current video, but when the user inputs certain triggers and buttons, they can “deal damage” to the creature in the scene which causes the creature to flinch and the stage to change.

This was an early test into creating reactions in Notch and was my first project streamed on such a large interaction stage. The 3D creature model used came from the Legend of Zelda N64 series.

Sandra Spotify Loops

The below three videos are shorts I made that would be perfectly fit for being added as a “Spotify Loop” for the selected songs. By analyzing the singer Sandra and understanding the aesthetics of her music, I created correlated music videos that can play on loop for the entirety of the song. This used a completely different skill set from my early works in Notch and is the type of video creation that helped me understand the skills I would utilize to create my Long Form Video for Dorohedoro

Basic Notch Loops

Below are my first ever demo loops in using the Notch Builder program. The general idea was simply to take any song and form any fitting visual loop without any specific theme. The video can easily loop throughout the entire length of the video, however the main focus was to break the ice of using Notch, even since I have had no prior experience at the time making these loops in any similar program like Notch Builder.
